Philipp Rüttgers grew up in West Berlin before 1989, when the wall was separating communism and capitalism, living in the time of Nina Hagen, Punks, alternative communities and Tchernobyl.
He has a gift expressing emotions of our everyday life through music, creating his very personal style of colours and sounds. Praised as a renewal mind of music, an excellent composer and a virtuosic but tender pianist, Philipp crosses different genres with ease propelling music to a guaranteed excitement.
Philipp is beside his own Phil’s Music Laboratory active with several outstanding ensembles which led him to perform at major stages in Holland like the North Sea Jazz Festival, Bimhuis and Jazz International Rotterdam and in Germany the A-Trane, Unterfahrt, and Jazzahead.
His latest project, Twists, is being performed with a totally new quintet consisting of musicians with varied backgrounds in jazz, classical, improv, electronic, and Indian music.

Twists of H.C. Andersen's Untaped Fairy Tales is the newest album of pianist/composer Philipp Rüttgers. It is recorded live in Rotterdam, as a result of the North Sea Jazz Composition Assignment 2018. According to the jury, "We are impressed by the large wealth of ideas and composing style of Rüttgers, which is colorful, dynamically varied and also has an interesting rhythm."
The album contains of 6 compositions, all inspired by the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. “My mother reading them to me became an important part of my childhood. Rereading Andersen’s fairy tales opened my eyes how deeply layered, humoresque and most notably, how timeless they are.”
