Baritone saxophoneplayer Rik van den Bergh pays tribute to pianist, arranger, composer and producer Duke Pearson. “He was a heavy cat in his days and I think he still is, and deserves more recognition. His melodies are always strong, often using catchy motives. The harmonic structures underneath these melodies are always challenging. His tunes contain the blues, the tradition of the American songbook, and typical hardbop vocabulary. It is all there.”
